AN INVITATION TO THE NEW MEXICO RECORD CHALLENGE

Forty kilometers. Six thousand, three hundred feet above sea level, with only twenty feet of total elevation change. One turn and relatively favorable, calm September winds. These are somewhat meaningless statistics until they are combined with a few others: 41 National records including 47 minutes, 35.37 seconds for individual men (John Frey in 1990), 51 minutes 36.24 seconds for individual women (Mari Holden in 1995), tandem records, masters records, junior records, and the list goes on and on.

VAUGHN TO ROSWELL

Anyone who has done several years of racing – regardless of the type of racing – will remember a select few races much more vividly than all the rest. This heightened memory may be due to an excellent result brought about by focused and fruitful training, or possibly the opposite of that, where the training was right but the race didn’t work out as planned. Alternately, some of the most memorable can be due to the race itself – some combination of conditions rarely experienced. Such was the Vaughn to Roswell race of (1993), when conditions combined to produce the fastest road race in the living memory of an entire generation of southwestern bicycle racers.
